Make sure your 2 and 3 year old is protected this winter

5 November 2025

A free NHS flu vaccine is available for your child if they are aged 2 and 3 years old in Kirklees through their GP or participating community pharmacy.

Flu is unpleasant for anyone at any time and vaccinating your child helps protect them from serious illness or even hospitalisation.

Children under the age of 5 years have one of the highest rates of hospital admissions due to flu with around 6000 every year and it’s even more important if your child has a health condition.

Ask for the right vaccine for your 2 to 3 year old

The nasal flu vaccine offers the best protection for 2 to 3 year olds and contains porcine gelatine, which may not be suitable for all families.

You can ask for an injectable flu vaccine that is free from porcine gelatine if this is more appropriate for your family. Please speak to your GP, nurse or pharmacist if you would like the porcine-free option for your child

The flu viruses can change from one winter to the next, that’s why it is important to have your child vaccinated again this year.

Vaccinating your child will also help protect more vulnerable friends and family and people with health conditions in the wider community.

Flu can be very unpleasant for young children and can sometimes lead to serious illness. Symptoms can include fever, dry cough, sore throat, aching joints and extreme tiredness. Children also play a key role in spreading flu to others, including older people and those with underlying health conditions — which can put them at greater risk. The vaccine is the best defence we have to help stop the spread and protect our communities.

To book a flu vaccine for a child aged 2 or 3 years old, you can contact their GP surgery to book an appointment or book a free NHS flu vaccination at a pharmacy online  or by using the NHS App.

You can also find out more information about flu and who else is eligible for a free flu vaccination on the NHS website.
